Emergency dentist Toorak – Care when you need it most
Dental emergencies are quite frightening and often painful. Prompt treatment is almost always required to alleviate pain and to ensure the teeth have the best possible chance of survival.
Sometimes, teeth become fractured by trauma, grinding, or biting on hard objects. In other cases, fillings, crowns, and other restorative devices can be damaged or fall out of the mouth completely. If there is severe pain, it is essential to contact our office immediately. The pain caused by dental emergencies almost always gets worse without treatment, and dental issues can seriously jeopardize physical health.
Emergency dentist in Toorak: when to call
If you need an emergency dentist in Toorak, Toorak Village Dental Care is here to help during our opening hours. Call us as early in the day as you can. Our team will ask a few questions about what's happened, give you advice on what to do in the meantime and find the earliest appointment we can. New and existing patients are welcome.
If you have swelling that is spreading to your eye or neck, or you're having trouble breathing or swallowing, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

It's worth calling us the same day if you have:
✓Severe or throbbing toothache
That pain relief isn't controlling.
✓Swelling
In your gum, face or jaw.
✓A knocked-out tooth
Or a tooth pushed out of position.
✓A cracked or broken tooth
Especially if it's sharp or painful.
✓A lost filling or crown
✓Bleeding that won't stop
After an extraction.
Some problems, like a small chip with no pain, can usually wait for a regular appointment. Read more: can a chipped tooth wait for a dental appointment? If you're not sure whether you need an emergency dentist in Toorak, call us and we'll help you decide.
What to do before you see us
Knocked-out adult tooth
Time matters most here. Try to see a dentist within 30 minutes if you can.
Find the tooth
Pick it up by the crown (the white part). Don't touch the root.
Rinse briefly
If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. Don't scrub it.
Put it back
If you can, gently push it back into its socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
Keep it moist
If not, keep it in milk, or inside your cheek if you're old enough not to swallow it. Don't let it dry out or store it in water.
Don't put a knocked-out baby tooth back in. It can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Bring your child in so we can check the area.
Chipped, cracked or broken tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any broken pieces. If there's bleeding, press gently on a clean gauze pad for 10 minutes. A cold compress on your cheek can help with swelling. Avoid chewing on that side until we've checked it.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown somewhere safe and bring it with you, as we may be able to refit it. Don't use household glue. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth for a short time.
Toothache and swelling
Rinse with warm salty water and use over-the-counter pain relief as directed by your pharmacist. Don't put aspirin directly on your gum. Swelling can be a sign of infection, so have it checked by an emergency dentist in Toorak.

What happens at your emergency appointment
When you see our emergency dentist in Toorak, we'll start by asking about your symptoms and your medical history, then examine the area and take x-rays if they're needed. Our first goal is to ease your pain and stop any problem from getting worse.
We'll then explain what we've found and what your options are. Sometimes the problem can be fixed in that visit. Other times we'll provide temporary treatment, such as a dressing or temporary filling, and book you in to complete the work. Depending on the cause, ongoing treatment might include a filling or cosmetic bonding to repair a chipped tooth, root canal treatment if the nerve is infected or damaged, a crown to protect a cracked or weakened tooth, or removing a tooth that can't be saved.
Your emergency dentist in Toorak will give you a cost estimate before any further treatment. We accept all private health funds, and you can claim on the spot with HICAPS.

Our opening hours
Monday to Thursday, 8am to 5pm

If you need advice when we're closed, you can call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 to speak with a registered nurse, any time of day. In a life-threatening emergency, call 000.
Reducing the risk of dental emergencies
Not every emergency can be prevented, but a few habits can lower your chances of needing an emergency dentist in Toorak:
- Wear a custom mouthguard for contact sports.
- Don't chew ice, hard lollies or pen lids, or use your teeth to open packets.
- Keep up regular check-ups so we can spot weak fillings, cracks and decay early.
- If you grind your teeth at night, ask us whether a night guard may help.
